What is the definition of a theory? In the physical sciences, “a theory is a set of hypotheses that have been tested repeatedly and that Page 3 have not been rejected” (Relethford, 1997:15). Evolutionary theory fits nicely into this definition. However, because a theory is a set of hypotheses, the term “hypothesis” must also be defined. A hypothesis is simply a testable explanation of observable facts. Although evolution can be explained by many hypotheses, each must be testable. A possibility must exist that a hypothesis can be rejected.

Biomedical interests overlap with those of physical anthropology. Biomedical scientists focus on issues concerning public health, growth and development, nutrition, aging, disease, pathology, epidemiology, genetics, and forensic science. The theoretical bases of evolution, human adaptation, biological human variation and their relationship to cultural factors are particularly relevant to biomedical applications. A growing number of physical anthropologists are bringing these orientations to full-time research careers in private industry and schools of medicine and public health.

It was, however, the one that has withstood the test of time. For centuries before Darwin’s seminal work on evolution, the concept of biological change was not universally accepted in Western society. Many scholars believed that a supernatural force created earth and all its living creatures in their present form; species did not change over time. The science of biology (or natural history) was based primarily on descriptions and classifications of living organisms. Carolus Linnaeus (1707–1778), a Swedish naturalist, compiled the first formal classification, or taxonomy, of all known living creatures.
