When you get a sharp focus you can have a second person measure the separation. Do this three times and average. If the difference between your measurements is more than 1/2 inch you need a better way because the average may not be close enough. For a more accurate method attach, at right angles, a piece of white cardboard to the end of a stick. A yardstick or meter stick is fine. Slide the lens along the stick until you have as small and sharp an image of the Sun as you can get. Keep the lens square to the stick.
