Educational change is not easy, nor straightforward. It involves a complex weave of individual and micro-political strands that take on idiosyncratic forms within each school context. Consequently it involves much negotiation, arbitration and coalition-building, as well as sensitivity to colleagues’ professional views and personal feelings. It is about changing attitudes and actions; beliefs and behaviour. It follows that providing leadership in schools that are attempting to become more inclusive is not for the faint-hearted.

I mentioned the way she had chosen to work with Gary. Apparently this had been by chance, although she had steered him to the front of the class so as to ‘keep a close eye on him’. It seems that Gary can be disruptive sometimes. We talked about different tactics for keeping an eye on potentially difficult pupils. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of our discussion, however, concerned ways of catering for differences within the class. I expressed my worry that sometimes so-called ‘differentiation’ strategies of the type that are currently fashionable can set limits on our expectation of certain children in such a way as to lower their performance.
