It is one of the lesserknown figures of Stoicism, Dio of Prusa, later called Chrysostom, who dealt with poverty and the required policies for its reduction. One of his orations dealt with the problem of urban poverty and the need for reform, described by Barker as ‘a sketch of social policy, and a plan of social welfare, which has hardly any parallel in classical literature’ (Barker, 1956, p 299). He raises the well-known dilemmas of urban poverty: the shortage of jobs for the unskilled, the low pay of unskilled occupations, the hazardous nature of many of them and the difficulties of alternative employment.

Despite the changes in the Stoic creed and the fact that several top government officials and one emperor – Marcus Aurelius – were Stoic leaders, many Stoics died at the behest of the Emperor because of their views. The virtuous Stoic individual Human welfare is best served, according to Stoicism, when people live according to Nature, that is, living in association with others in society – not outside society – and according to reason, the gift that unites human beings and also separates humans from animals.

Old age Despite the fact that people died young, discussions on old age can be found in both the Greek and the Roman literature. Cicero’s essay on old age written in 44 BC is one of the best of its kind. It draws upon the writings of several Greeks, including Plato, and it anticipates many of the debates in today’s gerontology. He identified and criticised four reasons that were commonly given to explain and justify old people’s lives. First, old age involves withdrawal from work that gives people income and status and this happens because there are no jobs suitable for old people.
